If all goes according to plan, Israel’s next phase of war involves invading Lebanon in the second half of July to fight Hezbollah.
As Israel and Lebanon continue to trade fire across their shared border, German newspaper Bild, citing diplomatic sources, claims that Israel will proceed with a full-scale invasion of Lebanon unless Hezbollah stops attacking northern Israel. Israel is also demanding that Hezbollah withdraw from Israel’s northern border region to areas beyond the Litani River, which is probably a tall order.
The Litani River is located about 18 miles north of the Israel-Lebanon border, which means Israel wants Hezbollah to move substantially further away from where its forces are currently perched along Israel’s northern border.
In order for Israeli citizens who fled the area to ever be able to return home, Hezbollah’s presence will need to be dealt with, Israel says about its planned response to the situation later this month.

Hezbollah has its own conditions as well. Unless Israel agrees to stop committing genocide in Gaza, Hezbollah plans to continue bombing northern Israel, its officials said.
Israel, meanwhile, is indicating that its plan is to agree to a ceasefire in Gaza so that troops and other resources can be redeployed to northern Israel to fight Hezbollah. The fighting is not going to stop any time soon, in other words.
United States officials claim they are doing everything they can to try to stop any escalation of the situation in Lebanon. However, the U.S. will support Israel no matter what happens, including by funding and arming Israel to wage war on Hezbollah in Lebanon.
To prove its Israel First position, Washington sent an amphibious assault ship to the Middle East last week in a show of force against Israel’s enemies. The ship will also be used to evacuate Americans from Lebanon should the need arise.
Israel continues to hint that it does not have the resources necessary to fight two wars at the same time: one in Gaza and the other in Lebanon. This means one of two things: Israel will mostly pull out of Gaza and redirect its efforts to Lebanon or it will demand that the U.S., meaning U.S. taxpayers, foot the bill for whatever it demands in order to “win.”
Israeli journalist Alon Ben David reported that Israel’s losses in Gaza are so significant that the Jewish state is “not currently ready for a broad campaign in Lebanon.”
Over the past nine months since the war in Gaza began on October 7, Israel saw more than 500 of its armored vehicles incur significant damage from the Palestinian resistance. Even worse are Israel’s ammunition stores, which are all but depleted.
It is precisely because Israel is running out of weapons, bullets and troops that Netanyahu is freaking out at the U.S. for reportedly “withholding” some arms shipments. Netanyahu says these withholdings are the reason why he cannot launch a second military campaign in Lebanon.
What Israel launched in Gaza in the aftermath of October 7 was supposed to only last “a few weeks.” Now, nearly an entire pregnancy term later, the war is still raging and Israel is planning to launch a second one against Lebanon.
“They are tired, physically and mentally,” David wrote about Israeli troops. “If we call them to occupy southern Lebanon, they will be there but they will not be at their best.”
